Buying a car in Germany for Croatia

Before buying a car for Croatia, check the documents, the tax treatment of the transaction and the registration procedure. The price in the listing alone does not show all the costs. Clarify who is selling the car, who is buying it and what details will appear on the invoice and in the contract.

VAT: age and mileage matter

For VAT purposes in the EU, a car counts as new if no more than six months have passed since it was first put into use or if its mileage is no more than 6,000 km. Either one of these conditions is enough. So a car that is used in the everyday sense may still count as new for tax purposes. For a car older than six months and with more than 6,000 km on the clock, the procedure depends among other things on the seller and the type of transaction. Do not assume a right to the net price simply from the buyer's country. Before paying, ask the seller to explain the final amount and the tax treatment in writing. Documents and delivery

Agree on a contract or invoice that identifies the car, the full set of registration documents and the available conformity documents. Decide on the method of delivery: a transport company or driving the car yourself. If you drive it yourself, registration, plates, insurance and the transit countries are checked separately. With a transport company, the recipient's authority and the handover report are agreed in advance.
