No more secrets about the new model of the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class W464 2018-2019

Since the first photos appeared online recently, we even know what it looks like. Mostly like the previous model in the W-463 body. Just how different the new G-Class actually is needs some explaining. For example: it has gained 12 inches in width and 5 inches in length. It has grown 1.5 centimetres in height. Despite the larger dimensions, the vehicle's weight has dropped by 170 kg (to 2,430 kg), which should undoubtedly have a positive effect on its driving dynamics as well as on comfort.

The new G-Class has a larger cabin, and rear passengers have more room too. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, there is around 15 centimetres of additional space at the rear.

Different types of steel and aluminium were used in the production of the new Mercedes. What has been the norm for most passenger cars for many years is a novelty in the G-Class: the wings, bonnet and doors are made of aluminium. The frame and body are around 55 percent stiffer, despite the lightweight construction.

The permissible gross weight of the G 500 is 3150 kilograms. This means the G 500 can now carry a load of 721 kilograms. The famous 4.0-litre V8 from AMG was chosen as the powertrain. As usual, output is 422 hp and maximum torque is 610 newton metres. Fuel consumption will fall from 12.3 to 11.1 litres per 100 km.

Mercedes will certainly not give up on diesel

The chassis of the new vehicle was developed by Mercedes together with its AMG division. The front wheels have independent suspension. The rear axle remains rigid, but it is now located by four trailing arms on each side plus stabilisers. Ground clearance has increased to 241mm.

Thanks to three fully locking differentials, the G-Class will handle rough terrain with ease. In some respects even better than its predecessor, because of the wider track. Instead of 28.4 degrees as before, it is meant to remain stable at a tilt angle of up to 35 degrees.

Like most Mercedes passenger cars, the new G-Class comes with the DYNAMIC SELECT driving dynamics control system, which changes the vehicle's settings: the response to the accelerator pedal; the characteristics of the new electromechanical steering; the transmission; the behaviour of the adaptive suspension. The new G-Class has five DYNAMIC SELECT programmes: “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Eco”, “Individual” and, specifically for the G-Class, “G-Mode”. Thanks to the new adaptive suspension with adjustable damping, the damper stiffness also adapts to the driving conditions.

The new G-Class goes on sale in May 2018. Initially, Mercedes-Benz will only sell the G 500 with the 4.0-litre petrol V8.
