The new X2

BMW is extending its model range with the completely new X2. It fills the gap between the X1 and the X3. The new X2 is 9 cm lower, 7 cm shorter, 4 cm wider and 4.36 longer than the X1 on which it is based. Fitted with a powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine, BMW claims that its newest offering is the sportiest small SUV.

And it really is! You only need to set off to realise how firm it is.

Let us compare the BMW X1 and X2.

The headlights have become larger and more expressive, and here you can see a resemblance to the Euro-only 2-Series Active Tourer. It is safe to say that the new X2 design easily stands out from the crowd of SUVs.

The BMW X2 is more “muscular” than the X1, with a sloping rear roofline and narrower windows. The 10-spoke wheels are almost the same as on the X1, but take on a sharper look. As already mentioned, the X2 is almost 9 cm lower than the X1, which gives it a sporty look.

The rear of the BMW X2 is perhaps its most attractive feature. Slim rear lights with a tapering roof and a pronounced rear diffuser only underline the sporty character of the car. The X1 has a roomier interior than the X2, but the X2 looks more like the sporty SUV that it is.

Practically nothing changed in the interior in the transition from the X1 to the X2, apart from a thinner, more rounded steering wheel and an updated seat design. The X2 has all the same interior components as the X1, including the central screen, the instrument cluster and the gear selector. Some new stitching details give the X2 a more distinctive look.

Overall, the new BMW X2 is not much better in design than the larger X1, yet it remains an interesting proposition. Besides the base 2-litre petrol engine with 192 hp, the BMW X2 specifications list an uprated (231 hp) version of this powertrain. Both engines are combined with an 8-speed Step Tronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with a multi-plate clutch with a locking function. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 7.3 and 6.4 seconds, the top speed is 225 and 237 km/h, and the average petrol consumption is 6.3 and 6.4 litres respectively. There is also a version with the flagship 2-litre turbodiesel engine producing 231 hp. With the same type of transmission, the specifications of this BMW X2 2017 quote 5 litres of average fuel consumption and the same 237 km/h top speed. However, the greater kerb weight of the turbodiesel engine increases the time for the sprint to 100 to 6.5 seconds.

• Basic costs 34500€, standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels, cloth interior, halogen headlights, front fog lights, dark matt “Oxide Silver” trim strips, “Gloss Black” accent inserts and a 4-speaker audio system.
• Advantage + 1450€, this trim differs from Basic only by radar cruise control, climate control and a 6-speaker audio system.
• M Paket + 6400€. Aerodynamic M package. 19-inch wheels, LED headlights and LED fog lights, leather and Alcantara interior, sports seats, radar cruise control, rear parking sensors, powered tailgate, dual-zone climate control, 6-speaker audio system.
• M Paket X + 6400€, this trim differs from the previous one only by the M Sport X exterior package.
