Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door 2018: review and specifications

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door has been unveiled in Geneva.

Design

If you have been following the latest models from Mercedes, you will certainly recognise the family lines in the new GT 4-door. The design of the new Mercedes is reminiscent of the AMG version of the latest CLS. The new GT 4 is based on a modified version of the MRA platform and is built in the usual AMG style. The distinctive radiator grille, slim MULTIBEAM LED headlights and flowing lines underline the AMG style.

What is under the bonnet?

The entry-level AMG GT 53 comes with a six-cylinder engine producing 435 hp. It takes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 285 km/h. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 already has a V8 with 585 hp, 3.4 seconds to 100 and a top speed of 310 km/h. The range-topping AMG GT 63 S carries 639 “horses”. With them, the sprint of the speedometer needle to the 100 mark shrinks to 3.2 seconds, and the top speed moves up to 315 km/h. For comparison: the most powerful 680 hp Porsche Panamera hybrid does it in 3.4 seconds and accelerates to “only” 310 km/h. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S comes with active hydraulic engine mounts and an electronically controlled rear differential, and the transmission gains a drift mode in which the ESP is switched off and the car becomes strictly rear-wheel drive. Incidentally, even the simpler versions of the model have 4Matic+ as standard equipment. The 9-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9G gearbox is specifically tuned to the requirements of the eight-cylinder versions of the new four-door AMG GT. It uses a wet clutch. This reduces weight and optimises response. There is also a RACE START function that ensures optimum acceleration.

At speeds of up to 100 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels by means of two electric motors. As a result, the car turns with considerably greater agility.

At speeds above 100 km/h, the system turns the rear wheels in the same direction as the front wheels. This noticeably improves stability on the move.

Inside, the new coupe is a blend of the AMG GT and the CLS, so it features two 12.3-inch high-resolution displays: standard in the V8 models and optional in the six-cylinder GT 53. Carbon fibre, Alcantara and genuine leather are used extensively in the cabin trim. As in other Mercedes models, the driver can choose between three different display styles: “Classic”, “Sport” and the all-new “Supersport”.

The four-door AMG GT also offers various seating configurations to meet every requirement. They range from an asymmetrically folding rear seat for the family to versions with two individual seats. Rear passengers can select various functions via a touchscreen built into the console between the seats. The options range from calling up driving dynamics data via the AMG menu to controlling the ambient lighting or the climate control and seat heating.

Sales of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe are scheduled to start on the world market in the summer of this year.
