BMW takes cars back if diesel is banned

BMW's promise to take cars back in the event of a driving ban!

BMW Germany is responding with its promise to the ruling of the Federal Administrative Court. Many customers are currently holding back from buying a diesel and are choosing petrol or hybrid cars instead, mostly out of fear. We wrote about this in this article. To restore customers' confidence in diesel and remove the fear of heavy losses in the event of possible driving bans, from 15 March 2018 a guarantee will be included in all BMW leasing contracts for diesel models. If, during the contractual lease term, an entry ban comes into force in a city that lies within a radius of 100 km of the lessee's primary place of residence or work, the customer can conclude a comparable termination agreement with the BMW Group on the basis of the diesel take-back promise. The terms stipulate that the maximum price of the next car under the contract must be 15 percent lower than that of the previous car. The forward-looking promise applies to new cars from BMW as well as MINI.

How will it work?

The take-back option applies to leases of new cars and demonstration cars of the BMW and MINI brands used in the period from 15.3.2018 to 30.6.2018. A similar offer is planned for new BMW or MINI models, to be made available for leasing contracts with an application period from 1.4.2018 to 30.6.2018. The diesel take-back promise applies if a public authority, in line with the Federal Administrative Court ruling of 27.2.2018, imposes a driving ban exclusively on diesel vehicles within a municipality on German federal territory. The city affected by the driving ban must lie within a radius of 100 kilometres of the lessee's primary place of residence or workplace. The driving ban comes into force during the lease term and applies to the contract. The customer must conclude a comparable follow-on agreement with BMW Bank GmbH. The new follow-on contract is a leasing contract that provides for a maximum vehicle base price 15% lower than under the previous leasing contract.
