Cars from Germany to Romania: how to find one and register it

When comparing a purchase in Germany with one in Romania, take into account the price of the car, transport, registration and insurance. The benefit depends on the specific car and the costs involved; age and fuel type cannot be reduced to a single unverified tariff.

Which documents you will need

When a car is moved from Germany to Romania, no customs duty is charged within the EU. Conformity documents, the technical inspection and registration are checked separately. Before buying, agree the list of documents with the registration authority.

• the purchase contract;
• the vehicle registration document;
• an official document confirming that the technical inspection has been passed;
• an insurance policy for obtaining export plates;
• a document showing that the vehicle has passed an emissions test.

Check the registration deadline and the payments due in Romania under your chosen procedure before importing the car.

How to register a car in Romania

Below is a historical example of the costs for a BMW X5 from the article of 28.07.2018, not a current registration tariff.

• 100 euros: entering the vehicle in the national vehicle register and passing the technical inspection;
• 10 euros: the vehicle registration document;
• 10 euros: new Romanian plates, 20 euros: personalised plates;
• 200 euros: the insurance policy.

In the 2018 example the total came to just over 300 euros. Today the costs and the insurance premium have to be calculated under the current conditions for the chosen car; the earlier figure is not an offer.

Can you register the car yourself

The account of a three-month queue reflects the experience described in July 2018. Check the current appointment system and registration procedure with the relevant authority; the earlier waiting time does not carry over to a new purchase.
